What a Pasadena Senior Living Advisor Is Actually For

Not a call centre, not a directory, not a clinician. An advisor is someone who has been inside these particular buildings recently enough for it to still be true, and whose job on any given call is mostly to rule things out.

Why local matters more in a small market

The whole field here is 75 licensed homes across 9 cities, 32 of them inside Pasadena itself. That is small enough for one person to know every building, which administrator answers the phone, and which home had a difficult year.

A national service cannot hold that. It holds a database, and a database cannot tell you that the night nurse everybody praised left in the spring. Knowledge in this work has a short shelf life and it is gathered on foot.

The three mistakes we spend most of our time undoing

The first is searching only inside the Pasadena city line. There are 43 more licensed homes in the ring around the city, and some of the best fits we find are ten minutes down the 210.

The second is touring before knowing the level of care. Families visit six buildings, fall for one, and then discover it cannot take a two person transfer. Establish what your father actually needs first and half the field disappears on its own.

The third is deciding on the lobby. The lobby is a sales instrument. Go back unannounced at four in the afternoon, when the building is tired, and you will learn more in fifteen minutes than in the whole scheduled tour.

What happens on the first call

It takes about ten minutes and nobody is trying to close you. We are trying to work out which of two or three completely different situations you are actually in.

  • How much help does she need today, in specific tasks, not in adjectives
  • Is anyone up with her at night, and how often
  • Is there dementia in the picture, and does she leave the house
  • What can the family sustain monthly, honestly, and for how long
  • Who is going to visit, and where do they drive from
  • Is there a hospital discharge date already set

Then we tell you what we would rule out

Most of the value is subtraction. We will tell you which homes cannot take the care level in question, which are the wrong scale for the person, and which we would not put a parent of our own into. You can see the whole field on the licensed register and hold our short list against it.

We go on the tours, we ask the questions families are too polite to ask, and we stay involved through the admission paperwork and move in day. Then we check back, because the fit that looked right in week one sometimes is not right in week six, and that is a fixable problem if someone raises it.

The bounds of the job

We are not clinicians. We will not tell you whether your mother is ready, whether a medication should change, or what a diagnosis means. We will tell you exactly what each level of care may lawfully provide, which is usually the question underneath.

We are also not free of interest. A home pays us when a family we introduced moves in, never the family. That is why we publish the entire register rather than a list of partners, and why we would rather you looked at it before we say a word.

And sometimes the advice is to stay put

If a parent is managing at home, and what is really needed is a cleaner, a grab rail, a medication dispenser and someone three mornings a week, we will say so. It earns us nothing and it is frequently the right answer for another year.

The families who call us early get that conversation. The ones who call from a hospital corridor on a Thursday get a shorter list and less room to choose. If you are reading this before anything has gone wrong, that is the best possible time to have a ten minute conversation.
